Mel Gibson’s long-awaited The Passion of the Christ sequel is finally becoming a real film as shooting will reportedly begin this summer in Rome, Italy.
Over two decades since the first film, the newly retitled The Resurrection Of The Christ will begin filming sometime this summer entirely at Cinecittà Studios in Rome.
Manuela Cacciamani, CEO of the historic Rome studio, confirmed the news of Gibson’s sequel finally beginning its production to Italian newspaper Il Sole 24 Ore.
“I can confirm that the next film directed by Mel Gibson, produced by Icon Productions, The Resurrection of Christ, will be shot entirely in Cinecittà starting in August and requires many theaters and stage constructions,” she said.
Details on the new sequel film are scant but Gibson is returning to direct with Jim Caviezel returning to reprise his iconic role as Jesus himself, though Gibson recently noted they’ll have to use CGI to de-age Caviezel.
Other tidbits for the sequel film were teased by Gibson in his appearance on Joe Rogan’s podcast earlier this year, where he teased the script is “an acid trip” penned by himself, his brother, and Randall Wallace (Braveheart) over a seven year period.
Reports of the Passion sequel beginning production and filming surfaced a couple years ago, though things got quiet after that. The sequel has been in pre-production for a decade with Gibson having gone through numerous drafts with Wallace.
The original Passion film is a faithful retelling of the New Testament and the events leading up to the crucifixion of Christ. Its sequel will focus on the 24 hours of Jesus’ passion and the three days between his crucifixion and resurrection.
