A new rumor is claiming that Amazon’s upcoming live-action Tomb Raider film has been quietly canceled.
While it has not been confirmed by Amazon, the rumor comes from The Daily Mail, which reports having received leaks that verify the film’s cancelation.
If true, this would be a big embarrassment for Amazon, which had spent tens of millions of dollars developing the film. What’s more, the Tom Raider film was never meant to be just one entry.
Announced back in 2023 by Amazon Studios and dj2 Entertainment, the film was meant to be the start of a cinematic universe centered around the character and would have shared a connection with the forthcoming 2022-announced Tomb Raider video game.
In fact, at the time of the announcement, insiders were saying that Tomb Raider was going to be the second largest IP for Amazon – second only to The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power. More recently, there were rumors that Sophie Turner had been hired to play Lara Croft.
Amazon’s Tomb Raider is not to be confused with Netflix’s Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft. Released last year, that version of Lara Croft has been successful, receiving a 73% positive rating on Rotten Tomatoes and even getting renewed for a second season.
